GENERAL ADMINISTRATION

INTRODUCTION

Prior to 1949 the district of Bhir was composed of two subdivisions.  It had six tahsils with 961 villages excepting the jagir villages.  In September 1949, 82 jagir villages were merged in the district.  Subsequently in 1950, 21 enclave villages in the district were exchanged for 22 villages of the then state of Bombay.  In 1950, the district was reconstituted into six tahsils and one mahal.  The six tahsils were Bhir, Ashti, Manjlegaon, Ambejogai, Georai and Kaij, Kaij tahsil being formed by transferring some villages from Ambejogai, Bhir and Manjlegaon tahsils.  Patoda tahsil was turned into a mahal.  The realignment of the boundaries of all tahsils was again effected in 1949 and 1950 due to the abolition of jagirs and exchange of enclave villages between the districts of Bhir and Ahmadnagar.  The district now covers an area of (4,216.9 sq.  miles) 10,921.771 km.2 and according to the census of 1961, has a population of 1,001,466.  The sub-division-wise break-up of the district is as under:—
