GANGAMASALA
Gangamasla, with 3,591 inhabitants as per the 1961 Census, is a
village in Manjleganv tahsil, situated on the bank of the river
Godavari. It is well-known for the shrine of Ganes which is in the
bed of the Godavari. One Hari Vinayak Phadke, a sardar of
the Pesvas, is said to have constructed it some 300 years
ago. Some inam lands were given to it by Raje
Nimbalkar, whose descendants still continue to perform the puja
on Ganescaturthi day. The temple is about two and a
half kilometres (a mile and a half) from the village. The village
is largely agricultural and wells form the main source of
water-supply. Weekly market is held on Wednesdays. There is a post
office and a high school.
