PATODA
Patoda, with a population of 6,018 in 1961, is the
headquarters of the mahal of the same name and contains seven
temples dedicated to Mahadev on account of which it is also known
as the abode of seven rsis or sapta rsis. Though
small, these temples are quite attractive architectonically and
are built in Hemadpanti style. Brief information regarding
each one of them is given below:—
(1) Sangamesvar: The Sangamesvar mandir is situated
to the east ot Patoda. A fair in honour of the deity is held at
the time of Magh Vadya Caturdasi. On Dasara day the
palanquin of Sangamesvar is taken in procession;
(2) Bhamesvar: The Sivling and the nandi
image in this temple are of considerable size. The upper portion
of its mandap has remained incomplete because it is said
that it could not be completed before sunrise as the temple was to
be built overnight. Patoda is sometimes called Bhamyace Patode on
account of this temple which is to the west;
(3) Tirthesvar; It is situated in the south-west corner.
There is a current belief that the temple has been built on the
surface of a well and that the well still exists underground.
Nearby is the temple of Mahurci devi. An annual fair is
held on the Dasara day when the palanquin of Sangamesvar is
ceremoniously brought to this temple;
(4) Nagaresvar: Temple of Nagaresvar is to the north-west;
(5) Lingesvar mandir is in the square formed by Vinavdevadi,
Mangevadi, and Yevalvadi localities;
(6) Belesvar is in Belvadi and
(7) Guptesvar, the last of the seven temples is underneath a pool
of water formed by the confluence of the rivers Sayala and Vanjra.
