The economic conditions in the district witnessed numerous changes during the last few decades. Though the basic structure of the rural economy did not undergo revolutionary changes, the economic life has changed to a great extent. The First World War, The Great Depression, the Second World War and the post-war economic crisis were the most significant events shaping the economic condition of the country in the pre-Independence period. These fateful events in the international economy had a definite impact on the Indian situation. In turn, The Indian situation was reflected in the district economy as well.

The process of economic development was accentuated in the Post-Independence period by the five year plans. National planning brought in its wake economic and social development. The various sectors of the economy gathered a momentum and the progressive impact is being felt gradually.
