GENERAL ECONOMIC SURVEY

WAGES

The 1951 census reported 30 per cent of the agricultural population as agricultural labourers. Their predominance is perhaps due to heavy demand for labour for the cultivation of cash crops like cotton and groundnut. The average wage rate for male labourer in the post-war years (1948-49) was about Re. 1 per day, female labour got about half of this, whereas child labour was paid between 4 annas and 8 annas. Wages vary between towns and rural areas and even between taluka and taluka, for instance, in Parola, Raver and Yawal the prevelant rates were slightly higher.
