AGRICULTURE AND IRRIGATION

NON-FOOD CROPS

Among the non-food crops of the district can be included fibres, edible oil-seeds and fodders. Sann-hemp (Bombay hemp) and ambadi (Deccan hemp) represent the fibres; coconut and sesamum, the edible oil-seeds; and grass and babuls, the fodders of the district. Grass and babuls account for an entire area under non-food crops, leaving six or seven per cent of the latter for the cultivation of fibres and oil-seeds. Of the crops other than fodders, sesamum and coconut appear to be the most prominent and the cultivation of fibres does not seem to favour the district. The following table shows the distribution of non-food crops in the district, in 1958-59:—
