HERLE
Herle (Hatkanangale T. 16° 40' N; 74° 15' E; p. 4,562), is on
the Kolhapur-Miraj road eight miles north-east of Kolhapur and three miles from the Rukadi railway station. On every Saturday a market is held at which the chief article sold is grain. Formerly, Herle was a military station with a detachment of horse called the divan pagas or minister's troops. It has two old temples, one dedicated to Maruti and the other to Mahadeo. The temple of Maruti which is thirty feet long and twenty broad, is stone built and is about 200 years old. The temple of Mahadeo seems older than the temple of Maruti and has a portico resting on stone pillars. It is thirty-four feet long and twenty-one broad.
