AKERI

Akeri (SavantvadI T.; 15° 55' N, 73° 45' E); about six miles north-west of Vadi, formerly a fortified post of some consequence, [It was unsuccessfully attacked by the Kolhapur Chief in 1783 and successfully defended by Phond Savant III. in 1805.] has a yearly fair on the 14th of Magh Vadya (January-February), when about 10,000 people assemble and drag a cart, rath, round the temple. Goods worth Rs. 20,000 are bought and sold at the time of the fair. There is a quarry of hard, purple or slate-coloured stone much used for building. It has a post office.
