SHIRGAON

Shirgaon (Ratnagiri T.; 17° 55' N, 73° 15' E; p. 3,063), situated four miles to the north of Ratnagiri is bounded on two sides by creeks. The land is hilly and rocky. The nearest railway station is Kolhapur, 85 miles to the south-east. A District Local Board road from Ratnagiri to Sakhartar passes through the village. Agriculture is the main occupation of the village. There are four temples, two mosques, three Marathi schools and two Urdu schools in the village. Besides, there is a farm where various experiments for the improvement of agriculture are carried out. The village panchayat looks after the civic affairs of the village. Grants under community development programme are given to various institutions to enable them to carry out activities useful to the people.
