KAVATHE MAHANKAL
Kavathe Mahankal (pop. 8,562), till recently a village in Miraj taluka, has become the headquarters of the newly formed mahal of the same name. It is largely agricultural, well supplied with water by Kamandalu river across which a dam has been laid at Kuci. It is known as KucT talav and irrigates over. 347.22 hectares (858 acres) of land. Wells and a nald flowing in the vicinity of the village are the sources of drinking water. The gram-pancayat here has repaired the old roads, laid out some kuccd drains and sunk some more wells. In 1962-63 its total income was Rs. 33,059 and expenditure Rs. 33,257. There are two middle schools, a high school and veterinary and civil dispensaries. Kavathe Mahankal has a large community of weavers weaving saris and cloth on handlooms, there being cooperatives of weavers, carpenters and blacksmiths. There are temples dedicated to Mahakali and Mallikarjun. The idol of Mahakali was said to have been found in the above referred nala. The second name viz., Mahankal seems to be a corrupt form of Mahakali. The Navratra festival is celebrated at the Mahakali temple. The Mallikarjun fair commences, on Mahd-sivratra day and lasts for five days, its notable feature being the large cattle market at which a fine breed of khillar bulls is available.
