AGRICULTURAL POPULATION
AGRICULTURE IS THE MAIN SOURCE OF LIVELIHOOD OF the people in the district as it engages about 70 per cent of the working population. It is therefore a basic industry providing not only most of the foodstuff but also some of the essential raw materials to feed the industries in the district. The population of Sholapur district is predominantly agricultural. The total population of the district as per 1971 Census was 22,53,840 spread over an area of 15,021 square kilometres. The density of population in Sholapur district was 150 persons per square kilometre. The table No. 1 gives the number of cultivators and agricultural labourers as per 1971 Census in Sholapur district.
The cultivators and the agricultural labourers constituted 35 per cent and 33 per cent, respectively of the total working class population of the district.
