MEDICAL AND PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES

FAMILY PLANNING

The only remedy to check the excessive growth of population is family planning. The family planning programme was taken up by the then Government of Bombay from November 1957, and implemented as a part of the general public health programme in the State through the Primary Health Units in the rural areas and the family planning centres in urban areas. All the public health centres in the district undertook propaganda, organised actual visits as also vasectomy and tubectomy camps in rural areas of the district.

In 1957-58, two family planning centres, one in the rural area and the other in the urban area, were opened in the district. The family planning centre in the rural area was attached to the primary health unit at Natepute in Malshiras taluka while the one in urban area was opened at Sholapur by Shri Christa Sewa Mandal, a voluntary social service organisation.

In 1960 there were seven family planning centres, one each at Karmala, Mohol, Natepute, Kole, Vairag, Pangri and Gadegaon in the district. In 1961, 1,132 sterilizations and 421 operations were performed in eleven camps held in the district. In 1962-63 camps were arranged at various places in the district where 1,929 vasectomy operations were performed.

The response from the public both in urban and rural areas has been very encouraging. During 1969-70 there were 25 Rural Family Planning Centres and ninety Sub-Centres in the district. A mobile family planning unit was also organised in Sholapur district, with the Assistant Surgeon as its head.
