URBAN SANITATION

The urban sanitation is managed by the respective municipalities. The officers of the Public Health department give advice to municipalities in regard to water-supply, conservancy, prevention and control of diseases and sanitary matters generally. The municipalities appoint medical officers to carry out the work in this regard.

Table No. 10 shows the development schemes undertaken by the municipalities in the district for a few years from 1935 to 1961.

The expenditure on 1 water-supply, and 2 drainage, conservancy and sanitary schemes incurred during 1963-64 in the Sholapur district amounted to Rs. 16,87,000 and Rs. 22,92,000 respectively, of which an amount of Rs. 14,41,000 and Rs. 14,49,000 respectively was spent on schemes in the Sholapur taluka only.

Organisation: The scheme for constituting a District ' Health Organisation has been sanctioned for all the districts of the State and is in operation in Sholapur district. The staff in each district consists of a District Health Officer, one Epidemic Medical Officer and four to five Sanitary Inspectors. Mobile vans either of the Mobile Hygiene units or anti-epidemic trucks are provided for rapid movement of staff and material during the out-break of epidemics.

Activities: The activities of the District Health Officer were mainly directed towards the suppression and prevention of epidemic diseases. Vaccinations and re-vaccinations were carried on, on a large scale and greater attention was paid to water-supply and sanitation at the time of fairs.

The sanitary squads turned out much useful work in village sanitation, disinfection of drinking water supplies and of infected material, construction of soak-pits and borehole latrines, removal of manure heaps from inhabited areas, filling of pits and hollows, draining pools and treating other mosquito-breeding places, laying barium carbonate baits and disinfection of houses etc.
