LODGING AND BOARDING HOUSES

A number of factors such as scarcity of dwelling houses, migration of people on account of transfers in services, etc. which have contributed to the growth of urbanisation are responsible to the rapid increase in the number of lodging and boarding houses during the last about three decades. Lodging and boarding houses are found only in towns and cities.

Many lodging houses provide only lodging facilities without any boarding facilities. The number of boarding houses in the district is more than the lodging houses.

The main provisions usually required by a boarding house consist of food-grains, condiments and spices, vegetables, ghee, edible oil, etc. Capital investment in utensils, furniture and other items varies with the size and location of these establishments. It ranges from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 25,000.

In the boarding houses meals are prepared and served twice a day and the customers are charged on rice-plate or on full-meal system.

An average boarding house provides employment to about five to eight persons. The net earning of lodging and boarding units varies from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,200 per month.
