MATTRESS AND PILLOW MAKING
Generally mattress and pillow making shops are found in big towns. The mattress and pillow makers generally belong to Muslim community.
The pinjari or mattress-maker hardly needs a considerable amount of fixed capital. All that is required by him is the carding bow, a pair of scissors and some needles. The entire set costs not more than Rs. 50. The business is managed by members of the family of the owner. The major items of expenditure are rent and electricity charges whenever power machines are used. The amount spent on these items varies from Rs. 20 to Rs. 60 per month.
The chief raw material used for making mattresses is cotton. It is available in different grades in local markets or weekly bazars.
The demand for mattresses is not persistent and continuous. But in the absence of any alternative source an average pinjari clings to this business with inherited skill.
