MALSHIRAS
On the Pune-Sholapur road, about twenty-five miles to the north-west of Pandharpur and about seventy miles to the north-west of Sholapur, Malshiras is the head-quarters of a taluka bearing the same name. It has, as per the Census of 1971, a population of 10,930 souls. Being the head-quarters of a taluka there are the offices of the Mamlatdar and the Block Development Officer. The Court of Civil Judge, Junior Division, is also located in this village. The jurisdiction of the police station at Malshiras extends over 75 villages. Wells and nallahs form the main source of water-supply. Primary schools conducted by the local body and a high school known as the Hanuman High School cater to the educational needs of the village populace. A weekly market is held on every Thursday. A Government rest-house is also located in the village.
The only objects of interest in this large village are the temples of Someshwar and Maruti. The temple of Someshwar is an old Hemadpanti structure. Three fairs are held in this village. A fair in honour of Dnyaneshwar is held on Ashadha Shud. 6 (June-July) which is attended by about 5,000 people. Another fair is held in honour of Dhuloba on Vaishakha Shud. 4 (April-May) when about 2,000 people assemble. A fair in honour of Hanuman Dev is held in Phalguna (February-March) and is attended by about 2,000 people. The shrine of Hanuman is very old and much visited by pilgrims as the village lies on the high road from Pune to Pandharpur.
