PUBLIC LIFE AND VOLUNTRY SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS

NEWSPAPER

Similar if not more dominating than voluntary social service organisations is the role of the press in shaping the direction and expression of public opinion. Hence, press is called the Fourth Estate. As a matter of fact, press takes a leading interest in the creation of political consciousness and is an effective instrument of ventilating freely and sympathetically the grievances as well as the problems of the common man.

The Kalpataru was the first newspaper in the district started in 1832 by the late Annaji Govind Inamdar. The late Inamdar started another weekly, viz., the Anandavrutta in the same year. It however appears that though these newspapers were started in 1832, the date of establishment of them is given as 1867 which was probably due to the change of their ownership to the Kakade family in 1867. These papers were followed by the Pandhari Bhushan, the Pandhari Vaibhav and the Sholapur Samachar. The Sholapur Samachar established in 1885 continue to be an eminent paper till the present day.

Of the leading publications in the district, the Sholapur Samachar, the Sanchar and the Kalpataru published in Marathi, are very popular in the district. The Sanskriti published in Sanskrit from Pandharpur also commands readership from the lovers of Sanskrit in the district.

Three dailies, fifteen weeklies and two fortnightlies are published from Sholapur.
