Vidya Vikas Mandal's Yashvantrao Chavan Mahavidyalaya, Karmala: The Yashvantrao Chavan Mahavidyalaya was established on 20th June 1966, with the object of giving collegiate education. The administration of the college is looked after by the Vidya Vikas Mandal, Karmala.

The total assets of the Mahavidyalaya are worth Rs. 13,08,000. The annual income amounted to Rs. 78,000 and the expenditure to Rs. 1,46,250 in 1969-70.

The Mahavidyalaya provides hostel facility to the students. There were 42 boys in the hostel in 1969-70. The special features of the college is that it encourages the students to earn while they are learning.

Hanuman Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Nagaj: The Hanuman Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Nagaj, was established in April 1968, with the object of imparting education from pre-primary to secondary level.

The Mandal is administered by an executive committee consisting of eleven members including chairman, vice-chairman, treasurer, secretary and joint secretary. In 1968-69, the Mandal had fourteen members. It receives gifts and donations from public.

Shivram Yesu Pardhe Loknatya Mandal, Sholapur: The Shivram Yesu Pardhe Loknatya Mandal was established in 1911, and registered in 1965 at Sholapur. It was established with the objective of making available recreation as well as the entertainment facilities to the public. In 1969-70, it had eighteen members. The annual income of the Mandal was Rs. 1,665, while the expenditure amounted to Rs. 1,665 in 1969-70.

The Mandal receives Rs. 250 as an annual grant from the Government; moreover, it receives gifts and donations from the public.

Jeevan Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Watambare: The Jeevan Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established at Watambare on 25th March 1968. The main object of the Mandal is to spread education, to conduct hostels, libraries and gymnasiums for the benefit of the entire community.

The total membership of the Mandal was seven, while the property was valued at Rs. 3,194.82 in 1969-70. The income amounted to Rs. 4,636.65, while the expenditure to Rs. 5,411.52 during 1969-70. The Mandal conducts a high school as well as a hostel at Watambare.

Sholapur Social Association, Sholapur: The Sholapur Social Association was established in 1953, with the object of helping the poor and deserving students by providing financial help to them for higher studies in medicine, engineering and technical and professional courses. It also strives to promote a feeling of brotherhood among the citizens of Sholapur. The Association conducts educational institutions such as schools, colleges, hostels, libraries, reading rooms, etc.

The managing committee looks after the administration of the Association and comprises the president, vice-president, honorary general secretary, joint secretary and treasurer.

The total membership of the Association was 150 in 1970-71.

The property of the Association was worth Rs. 1,12,875.79 in 1970-71.

The income amounted to Rs. 24,000, while the annual expenditure was Rs. 3,600 during 1970-71.

The Association provides educational aids and drawing equipment to the poor deserving students.

It received during the same year Rs. 7,000 by way of gifts and donations from public.

Patients' Relief Association, Sholapur: The Patients" Relief Association was established on 30th October 1932, with the object of giving medical treatment to the patients, irrespective of their caste and religion. This is the first institution of its kind in Sholapur.

The Association had ten members in 1969-70 and its assets were valued at Rs. 1,34,700 in the same year. The income amounted to Rs. 28,000, while the expenditure was Rs. 41,000 in 1969-70.

The Relief Association provides the following facilities to the patients:-

(1) supply of nursing appliances to the needy patients,

(2) providing home nursing facility,

(3) arranging for the ambulance service to the serious and maternity cases at a very nominal rate.

(4) maintaining a consulting centre for women and children,

(5) providing medical oxygen and X-ray treatment,

(6) providing attendants to look after the patients in times of sickness,

(7) administering triple vaccine and polio doses to children to prevent diseases, and

(8) providing medicines to the T. B. patients.

In 1969-70, the Association received Rs. 10,051 by way of grants and gifts from the people.

Padmashali Shikshan Sanstha, Sholapur: The Padmashali Shikshan Sanstha was established in the year 1912. The objects of the Sanstha are to impart education to the public in general and to the Padmashali caste students in particular. Its aim is also to open hostels for boys and girls separately. It also aims at the alround development of the members of the Padmashali Society. With this view it gives scholarships, books, concession in fees and loans for educational purposes to the students. The executive body looks after the administration of the Sanstha. The office-bearers of the executive body are the chairman, the vice-chairman, secretary and joint secretary. The Sanstha is registered under the Bombay Public Trusts Act. There are one hundred and sixty members in the Sanstha.

The Padmashali Shikshan Sanstha has property worth about Rs. 4,13,527. Its annual income in the year 1968-69 was Rs. 57,997 whereas its expenditure amounted to Rs. 58,254 in the same year.

The Sanstha runs the following institutions:-

(1) Late Narayanrao Kuchan Primary School,

(2) Late Narayanrao Kuchan Training School,

(3) Late Bhudevi Katkam Balak Mandir.

This Sanstha does not get any grants or assistance from the Government. It however receives donations and gifts from the public.

National Medical Education Society, Sholapur: The National Medical Education Society was established at Sholapur in 1963, with the object of providing medical education. This society has done remarkable work in the field of eradication of diseases in the district by imparting medical education. The membership of the Society consists of the following:-benefactor, donor, patron, fellow member, life member, ordinary member and ex-officio member. The executive committee looks after the management of the Society which had 229 members in 1969.

The property of the Society was valued at Rs. 42,04,628, its annual income was Rs. 9,59,344, and expenditure Rs. 8,91,367 in 1968-69. The Society received a grant of Rs. 3,33,000 from the Central Government in 1965, and an interest-free loan of Rs. 13,00,000 from the Government of Maharashtra in the same year. The Society has hostel arrangements for 250 male-students and fifty female-students.

Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Fund Samiti, Sholapur: Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Fund Samiti was established with the following objectives:-

(1) to help advancement of the backward class people,

(2) to conduct colleges, high schools, hostels and balwadis.

(3) to conduct adult classes and

(4) to run dispensaries and maternity homes for the poor backward class people.

The managing committee looks after the administration of the Samiti.

The Samiti has a building of its own. It received land admeasuring two acres and nine gunthas from the Government. In 1969-70. the annual income of the Samiti was Rs. 1,45,000, while the expenditure was Rs. 1,65,000. The Government provided Rs. 20,000 in the form of a loan towards the construction of a high school building. The Municipal Corporation of Sholapur also gave Rs. 5,000 as a donation to the Samiti.

The Samiti conducts a high school which provides educational facility to 700 students. Majority of the students are from the scheduled castes. The Society also conducts a general hostel at Mohol and a girls' hostel at Sholapur. The Society is also running a night high school where 175 students are admitted.

Sholapur Volley-ball Mandal, Sholapur: The Sholapur Volleyball Mandal was established in 1951, with the object of creating liking for Indian as well as foreign games among the students.

The Mandal has 25 members, and is managed by an executive body consisting of a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. The executive body looks after the day-to-day administration.

Vidya Mandir, Vairag: The Vidya Mandir was established at Vairag in February 1951, with the objectives of opening primary schools, high schools, a college, and a basic training school for teachers at Vairag and other places.

The Mandir had assets worth about Rs. 7,00,000. Its income was Rs. 1,42,000 and expenditure was Rs. 1,40,000 in 1969-70.

The Mandir receives financial assistance from the Government by way of grants as well as donations from the people.

In 1969-70, there were 474 boys and 137 girls taking education in the institution.

Shri Mallikarjun Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Chapalgaon: Shri Mallikarjun Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established in August 1969 at Chapalgaon in Akkalkot taluka with the object of establishing high schools, hostels and other educational institutions in rural areas of the district.

The executive committee looks after the day-to-day affairs of the Mandal.

The property of the Mandal was valued at Rs. 1,07,000, the annual income was Rs. 57,000 and the expenditure Rs. 57,000 in 1969-70.

The Mandal does not get Government grant, but donations and gifts are received from the public. About 250 students from 24 to 27 villages nearby take the advantage of the institution. The hostel run by the Mandal provides accommodation to 58 students.

Shri Shivaji Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Barshi: Shri Shivaji Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established and registered in 1947. The objectives of the Mandal are to establish educational institutions for the benefit of backward class and other poor students.

The administration of the Mandal is carried on by the managing committee consisting of chairman, vice-chairman, general secretary, joint secretary, treasurer and superintendent.

The total membership of the Mandal was 32 in 1969-70.

The property of the Mandal was Rs. 23,77,647, its income was Rs. 14,76,838 and expenditure Rs. 12,81,563 during 1969-70.

The Mandal received a grant of Rs. 7,34,694 from the Government and donations to the tune of Rs. 19,887 from the public during 1969-70

Besides, the Mandal conducts a printing press, a fair price shop, a co-operative credit society, a poultry farm and an adat shop.

Barshi Shikshan Prasarak Mandal: This is one of the important voluntary social institutions in the district and has done valuable service in the field of education at Barshi as well as in the rural areas around Barshi. It conducts the following schools and colleges:―

(1) Barshi Mahavidyalaya

(2) Junior Training College of Education

(3) Technical High School

(4) Yemaidevi Vidya Mandir, Korphale

(5) Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya

(6) Practising School.

Besides, the Mandal has maintained three hostels for the benefit of students.

The Barshi Mahavidyalaya was established on 15th June 1969, with the object of providing higher educational facilities to the students from rural area. In 1969-70, the college had a strength of 295 students. The college had assets worth about Rs. 3,00,000 in 1969-70, while its income and expenditure during the same year amounted to Rs. 1,15,000.

During the first year of its existence, it received a token Government grant of Rs. 5,000.

The management of the college is entrusted to an executive body comprising the principal and other members elected by the general body.

Bharat Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Barshi: The Bharat Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established at Barshi in October 1965, with the object of imparting education to the deserving poor and to help develop their cultural and mental outlook. The Mandal is governed by a managing body composed of eleven members. The Mandal had assets worth Rs. 49,776.66, while its annual income was Rs. 63,114.50 and expenditure was Rs. 63,114.50 during 1969-70.

The institution does not get Government grant but receives Munificent gifts and donations from the public.

The Mandal conducts the following educational institutions:-

(1) Janseva High School, Barshi

(2) B. R. More High School, Sakat

(3) Balvikas Kendra, Barshi

(4) Vidyarthi Vasatigrih, Barshi.

There are 45 students in the hostel at Barshi.

Shri Basaweshwar Education Society, Karajgi: Shri Basaweshwar Education Society was established on 15th August 1970 at Karajgi, with the object of spreading education amongst the students in the mofussil area of Sholapur district.

The assets of the society in 1969-70 were worth Rs. 30,310.33. Its income was Rs. 65,798.66, while the total expenditure was Rs. 56,60851 in 1969-70.

The society is administered by an executive committee which consists of eleven members.

There were 260 students studying in the high school in 1969-70.

The society received Government grant as well as donations from the public for school building.

Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Tembhurni: The Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established in June 1955 at Tembhurni, with the object of imparting secondary education to the students from the surrounding areas of Tembhurni and Kandar. The managing committee looks after the management of the society.

The assets of the Mandal were valued at Rs. 62,000 in 1969-70. Its annual income was Rs. 2,700, while the expenditure amounted to Rs 1,500 during the same year. The Mandal runs a Janata Vidyalaya at Tembhurni.

Bharat Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Jeur: The Bharat Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established in March 1966 at Jeur with the object of conducting educational institutions like high schools, Montessori schools, hostels, etc.

The management of the Mandal is looked after by a managing committee comprising president, vice-president, secretary and six nominated members. In 1969-70 its total membership was eighteen.

The assets of the Mandal were valued at Rs. 1,41,700 in 1969-70. Its income was Rs. 9,000 while its expenditure was Rs. 9,000 in the same year. The institution provided educational facilities to 314 students in 1968-69, and received Rs. 3,000 by way of public donations in 1969-70.

Banjara Seva Sangh, Sholapur: The Banjara Seva Sangh was established and registered in August 1967 for the economic and social uplift of the Banjaras in the district.

The administration of the Sangh is looked after by an executive committee consisting of chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, two treasurers, and two other members of the Sangh. In 1969-70 the membership of the Sangh was 55.

The Banjara Seva Sangh owns 1,015 acres and 32 gunthas of land which is distributed to 100 families of landless labourers.

Malshiras Taluka Hanuman Mofat Vachanalaya, Malshiras: This library was established on 1st January 1948 for providing library facilities to the people. The executive council looks after the management of the library. The total membership of the library was 103, its total income was Rs. 3,733.17 and the expenditure amounted to Rs. 3,733.17 during 1968-69. The library commands a good readership, and receives Government grant amounting to Rs. 1,000 per year. Its income from subscriptions amounts to about Rs. 500 per year. The library has a stock of 3,096 valuable books in Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit, English, etc.

Nagar Vachan Mandir, Pandharpur: The Nagar Vachan Mandir was established in 1874, with the object of collecting valuable books and making them available to the reading public. The executive committee looks after the administration of the Vachan Mandir. There were 216 members in 1969-70. The property of the Mandir was valued at Rs. 1,50,000, while its total income amounted to Rs. 6,500 and expenditure to Rs. 42,000 during 1969-70. It received Rs. 1,500 by way of Government grant, Rs. 1,000 as grant from Municipality and Rs. 1,000 from the Urban Bank. The Mandir arranges for seminars and lectures by inviting noted scholars and thinkers.

Samaj Seva Mitra Mandal's Karmaveer Annasaheb Jagtap Vidyalaya, Karmala: This institution was established in June 1967 at Karmala, with the object of spreading education by establishing schools and libraries for the poor students. The institution encourages extracurricular activities and sports among the students and provides for the necessary equipment. The executive committee consisting of eleven members, including chairman, vice-chairman and secretary looks after the affairs of the institution. The property of the institution was valued at Rs. 7,000 during 1968-69. The total income amounted to Rs. 23,000 while expenditure to Rs. 23,000 during the same year. The institution runs a high school which had 148 students in 1968-69.

Gautam Vidya Vikas Mandal, Tembhurni: The Gautam Vidya Vikas Mandal is a registered institution established in June 1960, with the object of emancipating the scheduled castes and tribes by establishing high schools, colleges, balwadis, ashrams and hostels. The Mandal has an executive committee of nine members and is headed by a chairman.

The assets of the institution were valued at Rs. 1,573.30, its income was Rs. 5,173.30 and expenditure Rs. 5,173.30 in 1969. The institution receives Government grant as well as donations and gifts from the public.

Sarvodaya Vikas Mandal, Sholapur: The Sarvodaya Vikas Mandal is a registered institution and was established in March 1961. It aims at providing educational and other facilities to the backward class students in the district. It has started the following institutions:-

(1) Jagjiwan Ram Vidyarthi Vasatigrih, Sholapur

(2) Mahatma Gandhi Vachanalaya, Sholapur

(3) Sarvodaya Vidyarthi Sangh, Sholapur

(4) Sharda Abhyasikagrih, Sholapur

(5) Katai Kamgar Sangh, Sholapur.

The affairs of the Mandal are looked after by an executive committee of eleven members.

The assets of the Mandal were valued at Rs. 3,000 in 1970-71. Its income amounted to Rs. 4,500 and expenditure to Rs. 4,000 in the same year. The Mandal receives Government grant as well as donations from the public.

Ajeet Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Piliv: The Ajeet Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established on 9th October 1963. It is registered under the Bombay Public Trusts Act. The Mandal has an executive council of nine members to look after its management. The Mandal conducts the following institutions:-

(4) Nirmala Raje Bhosale Kanya Prashala, Akkalkot

(11) Nirmala Raje Ashram Shala, Konhalli.

The Mandal meets a part of its total expenditure from the grants it receives from the Government.

Rotary Club, Barshi: The Rotary Club was established in 1969 at Barshi, with a view to render service to the society, to establish brotherhood among people from different regions and to arrange cultural programmes. The Club has many committees such as bulletin committee, Janata committee, magazine committee, club service committee, etc. The Club conducts a family planning centre and provides anti-polio vaccines and other immunisation facilities for the public. It arranges for lectures and seminars, and also runs a free reading room. It had a membership of 27 in 1969-70.

Nagar Vachan Mandir, Sangola: The Nagar Vachan Mandir was established in 1904 for the diffusion of knowledge by providing library facilities. It had a membership of 100 in 1969-70.

Its income was Rs. 2,297.90 while the expenditure was Rs. 2,237.55 in 1969-70. The Mandir possesses valuable books and treatises numbering over 1,800.

Yashvant Shikshan Prasarak Mandal's Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Vasatigrih, Karmala: Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Vasatigrih was established in August 1969 at Karmala to provide hostel facilities to the students from rural areas. The property of the Vasatigrih during 1969-70 was valued at Rs. 98,400. It received a sum of Rs. 33.500 by way of Government grant and donations from public during 1968-69.

The hostel provides accommodation for 200 students.

Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Kurduwadi: The Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established in 1947 at Kurduwadi with a view to spread education by establishing educational institutions. In 1968-69, the Mandal had nineteen members. Its property was valued at Rs. 70,000, its income amounted to Rs. 3,000 and the expenditure to Rs. 3,000 during 1969-70. It conducts a Nutan Vidyalaya which had in 1969-70 a strength of 850 including 500 boys and 350 girls. The Mandal has a library containing 1,500 books. It receives grant from the State Government.

Hindu Devalaya Sanstha, Kurduwadi: The Hindu Devalaya Sanstha was established in 1930 at Kurduwadi with the object of constructing and maintaining a Hindu temple in the Railway colony at Kurduwadi. The membership is restricted to the Railway employees only. There is a managing committee of fifteen members consisting of chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, joint secretary and trustee, which looks after the administration of the Devalaya.

The assets of the Sanstha were valued at Rs. 25,800, whereas the annual income amounted to Rs. 3,000 during 1969-70. The temple authorities celebrate various religious festivals and arrange for Bhajan programmes and religious discourses.

Shamlal Pardeshi Vachanalaya, Kurduwadi: The Shamlal Pardeshi Vachanalaya was established on 11th May 1948, with the object of diffusing knowledge by providing books and magazines to the people. It had 150 members in 1968-69.

The property of the Vachanalaya was worth Rs. 20,000, its annual income was Rs. 3,400 and expenditure Rs. 3,000 during 1968-69. The Vachanalaya contains 300 books in English, Marathi and Hindi. It received Government grant of Rs. 1,000 in 1968-69.

Gramodaya Samiti, Kurduwadi: The Gramodaya Samiti was established in 1967 at Kurduwadi, with a view to spread Gramodyog as well as education amongst the people. It had seventy members in 1968-69. The property of the Samiti was valued at Rs. 45,000 in 1968-69. The Samiti conducts a fair price shop and runs the following institutions:-

(1) Anand Bharati High School

(2) Anand Bharati Marathi School

(3) Pre-Primary School

(4) Condensed course for widowed women.

The Samiti receives Government grant.

Khandoba Devasthan Trust, Mohol: Shri Khandoba Devasthan Trust was established in 1960 at Mohol for celebrating religious festivals and managing the temples. The management of the Trust is looked after by a body of seven members. The income of the Trust was Rs. 700 and expenditure Rs. 700 in 1968-69.

Shri Naganath Devasthan Panch Committee, Mohol: Shri Naganath Devasthan Panch Committee was established in 1962, with a view to spread religion, to manage temples and to arrange for pilgrimage. It had 118 members in 1968. The Committee owns forty acres of land. The annual income of the trust amounted to Rs. 9,000 while the expenditure to Rs. 5,000 in 1968.

Karmala Taluka Co-operative Education Society's Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya, Karmala: The Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya was established on 5th June 1948 at Karmala, with the object of providing education as well as hostel facilities to the students from Karmala and the surrounding area. The assets of the society were valued at Rs. 2,20,000 in 1969-70. Its income amounted to Rs. 1,66,000, while the expenditure to Rs. 1,66,000 during the same year. In 1969-70, there were 900 boys and 300 girls in the school run by the society. A science committee, named after the well-known scientist Dr. Homi Bhabha, has been organised by the society for fostering creative interest in scientific knowledge and a well-equipped laboratory is provided for that purpose. There is a free lodging facility for the students while boarding is provided at reasonable rates. There is a " Poor Boys Fund " to help the poor and needy students.

In 1969-70, the society received a Government grant to the tune of Rs. 1,65,138. The society is housed in its own building.

Mohol Taluka Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Mohol: The Mohol Taluka Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established in 1954 at Mohol, with the object of opening educational institutions and hostels for students.

In the year 1969-70, the Mandal had a membership of 93. It possesses forty acres of land which it received as a gift from its sympathisers. Its expenditure amounted to Rs. 1,00,000 in 1969-70.

It conducts two institutions at Mohol, viz., Naganath Vidyalaya and Jawahar Boarding.

In the Naganath Vidyalaya education is imparted to the students upto 11th standard. There were 650 students in 1969-70 in the Vidyalaya. In 1965-66, there were forty students in the hostel. The Mandal receives Government grants as well as donations from the public. The Vidyalaya conducted by the Mandal is housed in its own building.

Shri Amogasiddha Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Kokhali: Shri Amogasiddha Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established on 15th June 1959 at Kokhali with the object of fostering the cause of education in rural areas. The property of the Mandal was valued at Rs. 12,007.13 in 1969-70. The annual income was Rs. 22,922, while its expenditure was Rs. 22,247 during the same year.

The Mandal conducts a high school up to 10th standard.

Vitthal Mandir Deosthan, Kurduwadi: This is a very old Deosthan established in 1880 A. D. at Kurduwadi, with the object of preserving the temples and to celebrate religious festivals connected with them. The Deosthan was registered in 1927. Its property during 1969-70 was valued at Rs. 10,644, which included the landed properly. The Deosthan conducts free classes in Sanskrit learning.

Jawahar Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Nimgaon: The Jawahar Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established in May 1966 at Nimgaon. The objectives of the institution are to spread education in the rural areas by conducting high schools, balwadis and hostels. The income of the Mandal in 1968-69 was Rs. 14,970.43, whereas its expenditure during the same year amounted to Rs. 14,970.43. It received Rs. 4.000 by way of donations from the public in 1967-68. The Mandal conducts two schools, viz., Nimgaon Vidya Mandir and Nav Bharat Bal Mandir.

Vidya Vikas Mandal, Jawala: The establishment of Vidya Vikas Mandal on 9th June 1958 came as a boon to the illiterate people of Jawala in Sangola taluka. The main aim of the Mandal is to provide educational facilities to the people in the rural areas.

The Mandal had thirteen members in 1969-70. The total assets of the Mandal are valued at Rs. 1,50,000, including the value of its building and land. Its total income amounted to Rs. 4,000 during 1969-70. It receives Government grant and conducts one high school and a hostel.

Barshi Gorakshan Mandal, Barshi: Barshi Gorakshan Mandal is a registered institution which was established in February 1891. Its main object is to protect and develop cattle wealth in general and the cow in particular. It also arranges the sale of milk at reasonable prices.

The Mandal had 64 members in 1967-68. The executive committee consisting of nine members looks after the day-to-day affairs of the Mandal.

The total income of the Mandal amounted to Rs. 71,796.95, while the expenditure to Rs. 37,617.85 in 1967-68. It possesses 200 acres of land, of which an area of 150 acres is cultivated and the rest is preserved for grazing cattle. The Mandal receives Municipal as well as Government grants.

The Mandal provides cattle-breeding facilities on scientific lines.

Sarvajanik Vachanalaya, Barshi: The Sarvajanik Vachanalaya is a registered institution established in 1863. [During the British rule it was known as " Native General Library ". After 1947 it was re-named as " Barshi Sarvajanik Vachanalaya ".]

The Vachanalaya has 180 ordinary members and twenty life members. It is managed by an executive council which consists of president, vice-president, chairman, secretary and eleven other members.

The property of the Vachanalaya is valued at Rs. 13,000, which includes the cost of building as also that of books and furniture. Its income during 1969-70 was Rs. 6,150, while its expenditure during the same period amounted to Rs. 5,150. The Vachanalaya received Rs. 1,000 by way of Government grant in 1969-70. Besides, it also received annual grant from the Municipality and donations from the public. The management of the Vachanalaya arranges for lectures and seminars on various topics of public interest.

The Vachanalaya provides free reading facilities to the public. It has recently started a separate section for children. The library has a stock of 4,000 books on various subjects.

The Vachanalaya is housed in its own building.

Anjuman-e-Targheeb-e-Taleem, Akkalkot: The Anjuman-e-Targheeb-e-Taleem is a registered institution established in November 1960, with the object of spreading education by the use of Urdu as medium of instruction. In 1969-70, the membership of the institution was forty. Its property is valued at Rs. 22,270. The institution receives gifts and donations from the public. It runs three high schools, one each at Akkalkot, Barshi and Pandharpur.

Nagar Vachanalaya, Mangalwedha: The Nagar Vachanalaya was established on 12th June 1875 at Mangalwedha. It aims at providing reading facilities and arranging lectures and seminars on topics of public interest. The total membership of the Vachanalaya was 121 in 1969-70. Its management is looked after by an executive body.

The assets of the Vachanalaya were valued at Rs. 46,677.23 in 1969-70. Its income amounted to Rs. 6,511.10 while the expenditure to Rs. 5,897.17 during 1969-70. It received grants from the Government and Municipality besides gifts and donations from the public.

The number of books in the Vachanalaya is about 5,000.

Arogya Sahakari Mandal, Barshi: The Arogya Sahakari Mandal was established and registered on 7th February 1959, with the object of providing medical treatment, both preventive as well as curative, at a reasonable cost to the people of Barshi. The management of the Mandal is looked after by an executive committee which consists of nine members including president, chairman, vice-chairman and secretary. The Mandal had 323 members in 1968-69.

The assets of the Mandal were worth Rs. 92,269.30, its income amounted to Rs. 1,04,214.62 and expenditure to Rs. 1,09,455.54 during 1968-69. The Mandal runs a hospital which has 56 beds, of which 25 are reserved for poor patients. The hospital is fully equipped with all modern aids for diagnosis and treatment and is staffed with specialists in various branches of medicine.

The hospital received Rs. 7,500 and Rs. 5,875 from the Barshi Municipality and Government, respectively, as grant in 1968-69.

Barshi Shikshan Prasarak Mandal's Junior College of Education for Women, Barshi: The Junior College of Education was established in 1961 at Barshi, with the object of providing training facilities to prospective lady-teachers in the taluka. The college had its own building and a library with 2,000 books on various subjects. It had 143 students in 1969-70.

Hostel facility for 175 students has been provided by the college. The total average annual income of the college amounts to Rs. 70,000 and expenditure to Rs. 75,000.

Barshi Technical High School, Barshi: The Barshi Shikshan Prasarak Mandal's technical high school was established on 9th August 1963, with a view to impart technical education. The school is housed in a rented building.

Its income amounted to Rs. 52,000 in 1968-69. The School receives a maintenance grant from the State Government.

The School is equipped with special workshop for courses in black-smithy, fitting, carpentry, turning, pattern-making, moulding, etc. The laboratory of the school is well-equipped with electrical and mechanical instruments. There were 285 students in the school in 1968-69.

Shri N. M. Wadia Charitable Hospital, Sholapur: Shri N. M. Wadia Charitable Hospital was established in 1934, with the object of providing free medical treatment to the poor, and is a registered institution under the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950. The management of the Hospital is looked after by a governing body which had fifteen members in 1969-70. There were 24 doctors in the service of the hospital in the same year.

In the year 1969-70, assets of the Hospital were valued at Rs. 27,95,850, the annual income was to the tune of Rs. 9,44,870 and the total expenditure was Rs. 8,03,662.

In 1969-70, the Hospital treated 31,599 patients in the out-door department and 6,289 patients in the in-door department. The total number of beds in the Hospital was 252.

The Hospital runs schools for general nursing and midwife training. Annually thirty nurses are admitted for the general nursing course and thirty for midwife course.

Silver Jubilee High School, Barshi: The Silver Jubilee High School was established in 1941 at Barshi to impart education at all levels. The administration of the School is looked after by a board consisting of fifteen members.

The income and expenditure of the society during 1968-69 amounted to the same viz., Rs. 88,68,836. The society received a grant of Rs. 2,51,410 in 1968-69.

The society runs 25 schools and other institutions at different places, of which three are run in the Sholapur district, viz., Annappa Madagi High School, Sholapur, Mangrule High School, Akkalkot, and Silver Jubilee High School, Barshi.

There were 1,797 students in the school at Barshi in 1969-70, out of whom 540 were girl-students.

The high school is housed in a spacious building and has a well-equipped laboratory. It provides for a book bank for the benefit of the students. The high school has a spacious hostel with an accommodation for 500 students.

The high school has a ' Vocational Guidance Bureau' where advice on vocational training is given to students by arranging lectures by educationists and eminent scholars.

The school possesses a good library containing about 4,700 books. It is housed in its own building.

Sheth Sakharam Nemchand Jain Aushadhalaya and Rugnalaya, Sholapur: This institution was established in the year 1917, with a view to provide free medical treatment to poor people. In the year 1967-68, its income was reported to be Rs. 44,850.94, and expenditure Rs. 70,287.23.

The institution has provided a Ras Shala attached to the out-patient department and a pathological laboratory. Various types of ayurvedic medicines are manufactured in the Ras Shala. The pathological laboratory is equipped to undertake all types of pathological tests.

During 1967-68, as many as 196 patients were admitted in the hospital, while 6,048 patients were treated in the out-patient department.

The institution runs the Shuddha Ayurved Mahavidyalaya which imparts training in ayurvedic medicine. It also publishes the Jeevak Magazine in order to propagate knowledge of ayurvedic medicines.

Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Akluj: The Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Akluj, was established on 1st April 1967, with the object of imparting education at secondary and higher levels.

The managing committee comprising chairman, vice-chairman and general secretary looks after the administration of the Mandal. In 1968-69, the income and expenditure of the Mandal amounted to Rs. 7,35,692.23.
