MEDICAL PROFESSION.
The number of persons engaged in medical services was 1,598 in
1961 During the last fifty years the medical profession has not
only gained in importance but has also expanded considerably.
The old beliefs in supernatural powers leading to the cure of
physical maladies have disappeared and people in rural areas as well as in urban areas have become more health conscious. This has made the medical profession lucrative. Under the implementation of rural health and sanitation programme, a number of primary health centres and subsidised medical practitioners' centres have been established. However, the proportion of doctors to the entire population of the district is inadequate specially in rural areas.
